Nobody needs to be told that the world has changed significantly since our last BTTB Australia Conference in May 2008. Organisations in both the private and public sectors are striving to cut costs and maximise their return on investment for every dollar spent.
Since BTTB’s inception in 2000, we have seen a number of swings in the business cycle, with the travel industry usually hit quite hard in downturns, but always demonstrating great resilience and “bouncebackability”. One thing we have always seen, though, is that businesses do need to travel, no matter how tough times are. The trick is in managing the process as efficiently as possible to meet business goals.
With this in mind, the programme for BTTB Australia 2009 has been developed to focus even more than usual on the key issues related to managing costs and delivering value to all stakeholders.
The speaker line-up will feature a mix of travel management practitioners, industry experts and management consultants and will adopt a variety of formats designed to provide delegates with optimal learning and networking opportunities.
Speaking of networking, there is no doubt that this is a core element of what BTTB Australia is all about. Most of our delegates use this unique opportunity to catch up with their own suppliers, observe what the competition are doing, rekindle old friendships and share experiences with their peers from other organisations, and hopefully develop new acquaintances who can provide mutual support and ideas.
The extended exhibition times, lounge facilities and BTTB Travel Management Awards Dinner all provide excellent opportunities for such networking.
From a personal point of view, I am looking forward to catching up with old friends, particularly those who have been regular attendees ever since our first BTTB event in 2000. In some ways, it is hard to believe that it has been so long; in others, it seems another lifetime ago.
On our 10th Anniversary, I would also like to take the opportunity to publicly thank the great team I have at BTTB for their support over the years, particularly to Allan Leibowitz who has been editing Business Travel Monthly for eight years and continues to do a great job developing these conference programmes.
I look forward to seeing you in Sydney in May,
Nigel Wardropper
