The advent of personal booking via the Internet was a huge breakthrough in travel management, but it’s clear that access via a fixed computer is no longer good enough. Business people have become more mobile and their communication has matured through laptop computers and the new generation of smart phones. The new mobile thrust has placed pressure on self-booking tools as they enter their second decade. But it has also presented opportunities, and some of the leading tools now incorporate mobile functionality such as traveller tracking and delivery of customised, destination-specific travel information. Read all about the mobile wave in this month’s Technology Special Report.

Other articles this month:

  • Most travel policies won’t be relaxed by much after recession blues lift - except in companies where it can be shown convincingly that less travel hurts the bottom line. In most workplaces, evidence will be produced demonstrating that more travel hurts bottom lines and that it’s often unnecessary.
  • With accommodation accounting for almost half of travel spend, it pays to adopt best practice. Companies can put runs on the board that will outlast the downturn into the next boom and achieve savings and value, as well as stronger sustainability and traveller security.
  • And consultant Tony O’Connor examines the benefits of buying groups which promise better deals for all involved but don’t always deliver.
  • And, as usual, you can read about some of the key account movements in the popular Contract Monitor section.
